We’re very fortunate that vessels, large and small, allow us to carry out our training exercises whilst they run up and down the Minch. This exercise is known as ‘stretchers’, firstly the winchman, in this case it’s Paddy Green, is lowered to the vessel, usually the stern. The other end of the line is attached to the stretcher and the stretcher is attached to the hook on the hoist. As the hoist is lowered, the winchman pull on the line to bring the stretcher safely on board. With the help of the crew the procedure is reversed and the winchman comes up with the stretcher whilst the crew ease him over the side prior to being winched to the aircraft.
